PROJECT NAME: Decent work monitoring

CUSTOMER: Better Cotton

PERIOD: 2023

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT:

Better Cotton employs a risk-based approach to ensuring safeguards, where in-depth monitoring and verification of decent work are conducted in regions with a higher risk of labor rights violations. Enhanced oversight of decent work practices is carried out on farms and heavily relies on field visits and direct interviews with workers and management. These interviews are conducted by trained observers to assess labor practices and the risks of human rights violations in the workplace.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SERVICES ACTUALLY PROVIDED:

-Сonduct a pre-assessment based on a review and triangulation of information from a range of sources in order to understand the key characteristics of the cotton production at the farm and determine the most salient labour/human rights challenges in the Cluster area to inform the monitoring.

-Conduct stakeholder interviews to understand key labour issues in the cotton industry in Uzbekistan.

-Review a wide variety of Clusters’ records and procedures covering the decent work indicators.

-Management semi-structured interviews.

-Worker interviews (in line with best practice guidelines around confidentiality, anonymity and security of interviewed individuals, especially those in a vulnerable position).

-Field visits and farm inspection.

-Local community interviews.
