PROJECT AIM The objective of the consultancy is to carry out a baseline assessment to better understand the landscape that women must navigate in the energy sectors in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This consultancy also served as a first point of engagement for potential members of the Central Asia Regional Network for Women in Energy. The assessment entailed a desk review of existing information and data, qualitative research among female workers in the energy sector through focus groups discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs), and quantitative research among academic institutions and energy companies.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTUAL SERVICES PROVIDED IN THE ASSIGNMENT

• Carried out a baseline assessment to better understand the landscape that women must navigate in the energy sectors in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan;

• The research methodology included Desk review of existing information and data, qualitative research among female workers in the energy sector through focus groups discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs), and quantitative research among academic institutions and energy companies.

• A methodology for qualitative research has been developed, including a detailed guide for FGDs and KIIs, and a data analysis approach;

• Planned and organized all logistics to conduct FGDs and KIIs, including receiving clearances, obtaining consent from interviewees, and coordinating with staff at the WB Country office in each country;

• 60 KIIs with prominent women engineers working in energy companies, utilities, academia, consulting companies, etc., and 28 FGDs with women engineers and engineering students;

• Analysed and summarized all data collected, and provide transcripts of the FGDs and KIIs;

• Suggested long term strategic goals for the network to achieve a normative change regarding women in the energy sector
